![]() I hate when sites like tumblr try to dictate what I should see on the main page. The downsides are too many, especially if it was ever implemented in a way where it became the default presentation instead of an optional tool you could go take a look at in your own time. Like maybe I see that many people who love the things I love also love some pairing in some show I haven't paid attention to, maybe I'll go watch that show and see if it sparks joy and boom, fun new fandom that was basically bespoke to my tastes.Īll of that being said, I don't want ao3 being used in that way, even if there is a part of it that could be useful. Out of those 50, 30 also kudos these other three fics, 15 of those people kudos'd a large amount of the same fics you do but also kudos'd these other fics that you might take a peek at' and so on and so forth, mathing out and pulling up things that you may have missed. I know that I often don't and it doesn't even occur to me do so.Īn algorithm would see 'these fifty people all kudos'd this fic. Not everyone even uses bookmarks, or uses them in the same way. Bookmarks are kinda that, but not in a universally useful way. Honestly, in a vacuum, if I could press a button after reading a fic that I loved and see what fics other people loved that also loved that fic, that would be pretty neat. We sometimes 'fake' an algorithm basically by going through the bookmarks of other people who seem to also love fics that we love. Examples are things like relationship dynamics that I favor, writing styles I like, writing styles I avoid, tropes I really love, and just finding and binge reading authors that really hit right. So it would be less based on the fic itself (though likely in part with tags and fandoms) and more to do with the consumption habits of other people who also liked the thing you like.Įven across multiple fandoms, certain preferences of mine often hold true. I don't want an algorithm on ao3, it is an archive, not social media, but I think the most useful criteria it could have if it did have one would be things like 'Other people who bookmarked this fic also bookmarked these fics' or just views, kudos, downloads, commenting habits, written fics of people who also liked a fic that you liked.
